CHAPTER FIFTEEN

Faith sipped her coffee and took a bite out of one of Dave’s famous donuts. She was warming up to them, but whether that was because she was actually growing to appreciate the greasy, cloying sweetness of the treats or because she was too exhausted to think clearly, she didn’t know.

Cassandra’s bakery was far more successful than Faith would have predicted. She had something in the neighborhood of two thousand customers over the past year, and many of them were regulars who returned at least once a week.

The list of people who interacted with all five of the artists was shorter, but still more extensive than Faith would have guessed. There were over a hundred individuals ranging from staff and owners at art galleries, curators at museums, editors and reporters for art magazines, dealers of various different supplies, agents, managers and the entourages associated with all of them. Since each employer represented had different databases and proprietary software, there was no swift way to cross-reference all of them. They had to do it manually.

“Christ, this is insane,” Michael groused. “You sure we don’t want the police department to deal with this?”

“I want them focused on the physical evidence. We might get a faster answer from that than from these lists. Did you call the Chicago Field Office?”

“Yeah, I called them. They have two agents watching the house right now, but they said she’s not there.”

“What about workplace?”

“She’s an artist. Her home is her workplace.”

“Are you sure or are you assuming.” He glared at her, and she lifted her hand. “All right. Just asking.”

“God, I’m exhausted,” he griped, rubbing his eyes. “I really can’t do these all-nighters anymore.”

“Two and a half more years,” Faith reminded him.

“Yeah, I know.”

“How’s Ellie feel about that?” she asked. “I know you mentioned she was trying to push you to leave earlier.”

“She feels like I’m being an idiot. But she’s not fighting with me over it anymore. I think she gets that it makes more financial sense that way, but she doesn’t like that I’m putting myself in danger.”

"Well, hey, you haven't gotten hurt yet. Maybe if you come home without bruises, she'll be even more relaxed."

“Yeah. Hey, maybe if I workout a little bit, I can start for the Sixers next year.”

Faith rolled her eyes. “Okay, grumpy, be that way.”

The door opened, and a smiling Ricardo entered. “Good morning, my precious pretties. Guess what I have for you today?”

“A promise to never call us your precious pretties again?” Michael asked.

“Nope. A name. A good one. One who was a regular visitor to all of the victims so far and who was kind enough to leave a substantial amount of fingerprints in the home of one Eleanor Swift.”

Faith’s ears perked up. That would make this suspect the first one they could reliably connect to each of the victims since Gregory Marten with Marissa Stone and Cassandra Holt. “Who is it?”

“The wonderfully named Jasper Flynn.”

With a flourish, Ricardo produced an image of a good-looking man with dark curly hair and brooding features.
